There are Starving Children in China!

"There are Starving Children in China!" Does Annabelle not know what that means? Apparently not, 'cause it isn't making her eat her food! I swear, if I don't go straight to fruit cocktail (or a single fruit in a fruit cocktail-type cup), we end up going through like 5 different foods each meal before we finally end up with fruit anyway. She won't even try most things. I used to be able to force something into her mouth, but I can't even do that anymore! With all of those starving children in China (or wherever they are nowadays), I feel bad for throwing away all of the food that we waste!

The only things that I can count on Annabelle to eat are fruit in a cup (pineapple bits, pear bits, fruit cocktail with cherries, mandrin oranges, and sometimes peaches), bread, and cheerios. She'll ususally eat the dried fruit and corn that gerber makes, but not every time. Lately I've been able to get her to eat canned corn or cut up green beans, but that doesn't necessarily mean she'll keep eating them. She's SOOO finicky too... she'll love something one meal, and won't even try the same thing the next day! Geez!

The only "tricks" that I found to sometimes trick Annabelle into eating things is to let her feed herself (but that usually only works for a few bites), get her distracted and in a trance by TV then trick her into eating something when she isn't paying attention (this sometimes only works for one bite, unless Annabelle realizes that it's something that she likes then she'll eat it), or letting her put dried corn or Cheerios into each spoonful of whatever I'm feeding her. When did meals become such a chore!? I'm tempted to just give her fruit cups until she gets over this pickiness, but A. It feels like this will never end and B. I know that isn't a healthy way for her to grow.

Oh well, I guess if this is the worst trouble she gives us, we're doing pretty good. However... I have a feeling this isn't the worst of toddlerdom. :)

My 16 week check-up was today (we're nearly a week late on this appt), and all was good. He found the heartbeat immediately, and it's a strong 160 bpm. My tummy measured at 17 cm. They are going to schedule my 20 week sonogram (the one where we find out if Baby Donald 2.0 is boy or girl!) for the week of April 16th. I can't wait to find out! On a related note... I've finally posted a couple of my preggo Belly Pics on our photo gallery. They aren't great, and certainly not to the quality of the ones that I took with Annabelle, but at least they're something. I had such great plans, but life got in the way, and my belly just grew way too fast so it just looks like I was big to begin with and keep getting bigger. :S I'll keep posting new pictures to that same album and updating the date of the album so it will keep moving to the top of our gallery as I post new pics, so just keep checking there.

New videos are up on Belle's video page, and new pictures of her on the photo gallery. She is really starting to interact with the TV and toys now. In one of the videos, she is shown answering "Map!" when Dora and Boots tell her to "Say Map". She does that nearly every time now. She also has a puppy toy that is interactive and says "peek-a-boo" to which she covers her eyes, and it says "bye-bye" and she responds "bye-bye" to it. She has an Elmo book where Elmo is a puppet and when I do the puppet in the Elmo voice, she does what Elmo says to do (Hey... I wonder if she'd eat if Elmo told her to???).

They did a study with kids a little older than Belle about the power of suggestion with eating. Kids were asked what they wanted for snack... a cupcake or a banana, and they almost all chose the cupcake. Then they were offered a cupcake or a banana with a spongebob sticker on it, and they almost all chose the banana. Then they were offered a cupcake or a rock with some character sticker on it, and they almost all chose the rock! I wonder if this would work for Belle? Worth trying! :)

I think its funny that Belle will only eat fruit because that's the one thing Halle doesn't eat anymore! She loves applesauce and yogurt, but cut up pieces of fresh or canned fruit... no way! She's starting to turn away from food now, but we can still usually sneak in a bite, and luckily, she still likes most food so she's ok once she's tried it. I cannot show her crackers or bread or applesauce or her drink before she eats though, or that's all she'll want. It's funny that they all go through this independence phase where they realize they don't HAVE to eat what you give them. Hopefully Annabelle finds some other foods she'll eat soon.. but she sure looks healthy, so I'm sure she's doing fine! :)

Sounds like Halle and Annabelle are following Auntie Erica's picky food habits .. especially Halle with the bread!! Maybe I should ask my mom what she ended up doing with me when I stopped liking food .. maybe she gave up and just let me eat what I wanted :)

I wish I could say it got easier but I think it will unfortunately get worse before it gets better. Zach will really only eat things he is familiar with. I cannot get him to eat vegetables. My only trick is to puree it into spaghetti sauce. He LOVES pasta.

I know this is scary but a few weeks ago I stuck little bits of vegetables inside the ziti noodles and gave it to Zach to eat. That little boy sat there and picked everyone of the veggies out. I also used to be able to put a bite of veggie behind something he liked like pasta or chicken and he would eat it. Now he takes the bite and spits out the offending vegetable!

Good Luck! I hope you have better luck than I do.
