I Just Don't Get It When...

someone has an "In Memory of..." sign on their car's rear window. I understand that someone you loved passed away and you'd like to keep his/her memory alive, but is putting their death information on your car window really the best way to do that? Personally, that's not the way that I want to be memorialized. Unless the dearly departed is someone who is known for something car-related (like the dear Dale Earnhardt, bless his soul), this just doesn't make sense to me.

And while I'm at it... I don't get the whole ribbon thing. Wait... I DO get the ribbon thing for the yellow ribbon or the pink ribbon (unless they're sideways flapping in the wind), but I've seen some ridiculous spin-offs of it. I saw one the other day that was a ribbon with "Soccer Mom" written on it! What? Remember the soccer mom and her struggles? Bring the soccer mom back home? When I saw the ribbon, I was alone yet I actually said "What?!" out loud.

Can anyone out there explain either of the above? Maybe I'm missing something. :S

I have an issue about 'in memory of' too. I've never seen it in the form of a car sticker, but when we were in Manchester a guy in his thirties was killed at a major intersection while walking home. His wife and two young kids left flowers there for over a year (and possibly longer but we moved so I don't know) - every few weeks they would replace them with new flower arrangements, with particularly elaborate ones for his birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, the anniversary of his death etc. The area where he was killed is not particularly affluent, and every time I drove past the flower-shrine (every day on the way to work), it made me think that his family was probably spending money it couldn't really afford on these flowers, and the money would be far better spent on other things. Also, having the busy intersection as the focal point for their grief bothered me - it struck me that they would find it so hard to move on if they kept coming back to the 'scene', and maybe it would be better if they planted a tree somewhere calm and used that as their focal point. I just felt so sorry for them every time I drove past; it seemed to me that they were stuck in a kind of limbo and were unable to start to move on.

End of rant. :)

i just had to look for one: http://www.sportgiftstore.com/somomrima.html ohmygeez.... and apparently you can support any sport now this way... i cant stand when they stick them on sideways... no longer looks like a ribbon to me, but looks like that christian fish thing going on... totally missing the whole it's a ribbon thing...
as for the memorial stickers.. i know some people sold them as fund raisers for schools when a kid dies in an accident, but i recently saw a toyota pickup truck with the entire tailgate airbrushed with 'in memory of' and listed 2 kids, a grandma and a grandpa with their pictures airbrushed on there as well... but then again the pickup had 24'' spinner wheels and tons of chrome on it so you know where I'm going with this... frikin tacky looking... NvL

This post freaked me out because I SWEAR I just had this exact same thought yesterday (about the memorial sticker). Well, actually my thought was... I would never choose to remember someone that way... but I know everyone grieves in different ways. The only thing I can think of is if you're the kind of person that needs the reminder of someone's tragic death to keep you from speeding or driving drunk or to get you to wear your seatbelt, then maybe having that reminder stare you in the face every day is a good thing.

I won't even get started on the ribbon thing. I ranted enough a few years ago to last a lifetime. But yeah. People are idiots.

Well I know this is an touchy issue, but we happened to find some FUNNY ribbon car decals. Support strippers, support drinking, etc... I know that its wrong since the real reason for the ribbons are for heros, but I could see how some rednecks would consider drinking and stripping patriotic and look at these things are heros ;0) hehe. Had to make light of the moment ;) Love you!
